An Easter egg hunt
Easter is a really exciting time for kids in Germany!
On Easter Sunday, many children go on an Eiersuche (Easter egg hunt). The goal is to find as many hidden Easter eggs as possible.
If the weather is nice, the Easter bunny hides the eggs outside in their garden or a park. If it is too cold, the egg hunt is held inside.
Sometimes, the one with the most eggs even gets a prize!
An Easter lamb cake
On Easter Sunday, it is also a tradition to bake cakes in the shape of a lamb or rabbit and to offer them to family and friends who come to visit.
The kids decorate the cakes with Gummibärchen (gummi bears), Smarties and other sweets.
Children in southern Germany often decorate village wells with Easter eggs, flowers and ribbons. The decorated wells are called Osterbrunnen ('Easter wells').
In many parts of Germany, people light Osterfeuer ('Easter fires') - large bonfires. This tradition is very old, dating back to before Christian times (more than 2000 years ago!). Easter fires celebrate the end of winter and the beginning of spring, and help bring people together after the cold winter months.
